$59.00
Staghorn Fern (Platycerium bifurcatum) are known for their striking, antler-shaped leaves. Staghorns are commonly found growing on the side of trees, and are often displayed by mounting on a wooden plaque. Staghorns do well in pots while young, but when the shield fronds at the base of the plant outgrows the planter, it is recommended to move it to a wall plaque or hanging basket. Water by misting fronds instead of watering the soil.

Care Information

The success of your plant depends on a variety of factors, most notably watering and light. Below are some species specific guidelines to follow that will help ensure that your plant will stay healthy and happy.

Pruning Tips:
Fronds can be removed as needed, and offshoots can be removed at the rootball to propagate into separate plants.

Fertilizing:
We recommend fertilizing your plant every 3 months using a granular time release fertilizer formulated specially for epiphytes.

Lighting:
Staghorn Ferns enjoy rainforest conditions that mimic growing in the shade of taller trees. Keep in shaded, indirect light. Direct sun exposure may lead to leaf burn.

Temperature Requirements:
Staghorn Ferns enjoy a humid, warmer climate. They enjoy indoor temperatures as well.

Watering Requirements:
Staghorn Ferns are epiphytes, which means they absorb water mostly through their leaves and not their roots. Mist thoroughly on a daily basis.

Repotting:
Staghorn Ferns can be potted when young, but are better when planted vertically. When shield fronds at the base of the plant outgrows the planter, fern should be taken out of the soil and mounted either on a wood plaque or placed in a hanging moss basket. Smaller offshoots can be separated from base of plant and repotted into soil or mounted.

Indoor / Outdoor:
This type of plant will do well in indoor setting or outdoors under shade.
