The success of your bonsai depends on a variety of factors, most notably watering and light. Below are some species specific guidelines to follow that will help ensure that your bonsai will stay healthy and happy.

Pruning Tips:
Prune accordingly to keep the desired shape of the Serissa. When pruning the Serissa, prune after flowering, when in growth, and when several leaves have developed. When pruning, be sure to prune back to 1-2 leaves, leaving at least 4-5 leaves on the branch. Lignified or woody branches will produce new buds.

Fertilizing:
We recommend fertilizing your bonsai tree every month with a bonsai fertilizer. Time-release granules are the easiest to use and can be added every season. Reduce the amount of fertilizer during the winter.

Lighting:
The Serissa Japonica will grow in filtered or shaded sunlight; avoid direct sunlight.

Temperature Requirements:
The Serissa Japonica does best in humid areas with filtered or shaded sunlight; avoid direct sunlight and cold windy areas. Good humidity levels must be maintained and can be provided by the use of a humidity tray.

Watering Requirements:
Water moderately, keeping the tree moist at all times. Serissa dislikes continually wet roots and completely dried out soil. The yellowing of the leaves can indicate overwatering, and brown and crispy leaves indicate a lack of water or humidity. Make sure the Serissa has adequate soil drainage.

Repotting:
You do not need to repot more than once every 2-3 years; if you are planning on repotting the Serissa, it is best to repot in the spring and use standard bonsai potting soil or any potting soil that provides adequate drainage.

Indoor / Outdoor:
The Serissa Japonica thrives best in outdoor conditions. During the winter, trees can be overwintered to protect them from freezing.
