Care Information

The success of your bonsai depends on a variety of factors, most notably watering and light. Below are some species specific guidelines to follow that will help ensure that your bonsai will stay healthy and happy.

Pruning Tips:
Mugo Pines can be easily hedge pruned back anywhere along the stem. Their dense needle growth can be thinned to the desired shape.

Fertilizing:
We recommend fertilizing your bonsai tree every month with a bonsai fertilizer. Time-release granules are the easiest to use and can be added every season. Reduce the amount of fertilizer during the winter. Take care not to over-fertilize as this can cause your leaves to burn or grow too leggy.

Lighting:
The Mugo Pine Bonsai trees need partial to full sun. If placed in full sun, take care to manage your watering to prevent your tree from drying out.

Temperature Requirements:
Mugo Pines are resilient to varying degrees of temperature, from warm and dry to cold and snow. However, protect them from hotter climates.

Watering Requirements:
The Mugo Pine Bonsai tolerate dryer soil much better than over-watering. It is recommended to water the tree daily and monitor the wetness of the soil. One of the most important things to remember about the Mugo Pines is that it must have good drainage.

Repotting:
Repotting the bonsai prior to springtime and needles opening will ensure the best results.

Indoor / Outdoor:
The Mugo Pine Bonsai thrive best in outdoor conditions. During the winter, trees can be overwintered to protect them from freezing.
