Kiryuzuna bonsai soil is composed of volcanic sand and can be used in place of lava in your soil mix. Harder than akadama, kiryu soil will not break down over time. It has a slightly acidic pH that makes it suitable for Japanese Maples and Azaleas, and also contains iron oxide that benefits conifers.
