The success of your bonsai depends on a variety of factors, most notably watering and light. Below are some species specific guidelines to follow that will help ensure that your bonsai will stay healthy and happy.

Pruning Tips:
When pruning, prune back to 2-4 leaves after 6-10 leaves have grown to maintain their shape. Lignified or woody branches will produce new buds.

Fertilizing:
We recommend fertilizing your bonsai tree every month with a bonsai fertilizer. Time-release granules are the easiest to use and can be added every season. Reduce the amount of fertilizer during the winter.

Lighting:
The Holly will grow in filtered or shaded sunlight to full sun. The more sun the plant receives, the denser the foliage will become. If placed in full sun, take care to manage your watering to prevent your tree from drying out.

Temperature Requirements:
The Holly Bonsai can quickly adapt to a variety of locations.

Watering Requirements:
Water moderately, keeping the tree moist at all times. The Holly does not enjoy remaining dry for long periods of time. The Holly enjoys occasional misting, except when it is under full sun.

Repotting:
The Holly may be repotted throughout most of the year, although the best times for repotting are in the spring. After repotting, water thoroughly and keep the plant in a shady location for several weeks so that new roots may grow. The Holly is adaptable to a variety of soil and moisture conditions.

Indoor / Outdoor:
The Holly thrives best in outdoor conditions. During the winter, trees can be overwintered to protect them from freezing.
