Bugs are attracted to plants that are not properly cared for similarly to how bugs are attracted to food that is spoiling. To prevent attracting bugs, for bonsai trees it is important to water your tree thoroughly each day and to keep the soil moist at all times.
A healthy tree will not attract any bugs. A good indication of an unhealthy tree is drying leaves, drying soil, and cracking trunks. Unhealthy trees are not dead trees, as they can be easily revived with the proper care.
If you tree has been improperly watered, we recommend the soak sink method to immediately hydrate your tree.
Soak Sink Method:
- Fill your sink with about 4-5 inches of water
- Place the tree including the pot inside the sink. (it is ok if the water goes above the level of the pot)
- Let the tree soak all the water it can within 5-10 minutes.
- Remove the tree, and let it drain
- Doing this will immediately hydrate the tree as well as the soil inside the pot.
- It is important after doing this, to continue to water your tree every day and to keep the soil moist.
