Maintaining your Bonsai Tools

Bonsai Repairing
You've finally bitten the bullet and purchased a nice set of bonsai tools. Now that you have them, you'll want to keep them in pristine condition so they will last a lifetime. Some tools may get damaged over use depending on the quality of the tool. However, a good quality tool will last a lifetime with proper care.

Cleaning your tools:

As you use your bonsai tools each day, they will invariably get dirty. Depending the type of tree that you work on, your tools may also attract sap which in turn attracts more dirt to stick on your tools. One of the easiest ways to clean your tools is to use a sanding block eraser. These work just like a normal eraser however it is combined with fine grit to act similar to sandpaper without being too rough. Using a sand black eraser will help you remove sap or any dirt easily by just rubbing the edge of your tools.

Polishing and Maintaining a Shine:

If you have carbon steel tools, the best way to keep them looking shiny and glossy is to use oil such as tsubaki oil or just ordinary wd-40. Spray or apply the oil directly to the carbon steel tools and then wipe them off immediately. This will not only help preserve the shine in the metal but also help against rust if you've accidentally left them out in the rain. If you've purchased stainless steel tools, you're in luck. Just wipe them off. Oil isn't necessary as the stainless steel material keeps them nice and shiny on their own.
